Dim Sum without Distance is a cross-cultural collaboration between Hong Kong-based new media artist Hung Keung and Canadian dance artist Lauren Runions. At the heart of this project is the making of Dim Sum.
In Hong Kong, Runions learned from Dim Sum Master Chan. The choreography that stemmed from this project was deeply influenced by this privledged experience of shared embodied knowledge: like Master Chan’s intuitive kitchen performance—clear gestures and spatial-flow—and notions of time and care in cooking—preparing the bowls, resting in the fridge, steaming, digesting, transforming, and all of the atmospheres that are manifested.
The collaboration reimagines the traditional Chinese painting theory of the "Three Distances," which explores depth through perspectives of looking up, down and across. Visitors are welcome to move through the park witnessing different screens of the videos from different perspectives—forming their own unique narrative.
